Inaugural Fashion Business School Research Showcase

Yesterday evening we celebrated the rich, diverse and multidisciplinary research within the Fashion Business School. Related to our four guiding pillars – Purpose, People, Planet and Profit, and adopting the dynamic Pecha Kucha format, we heard about sustainable cosmetics, hair science, fashion aesthetics, cultural appropriation, education and AI, sustainable finance, fashion and wellbeing, and the future of fashion retailing. A huge thank you to all researchers that participated @emmanuelsilva @akhadaroo @dankatamburic @jrogaten Gabriela Daniels, Young-Jin Hur, Lan Wang, Serkan Delice and me 🙂 With around 50 attending IRL and others via livestream, we were delighted to highlight the range and impact of FBS research with our internal community. A showreel will be produced for onward use on our website, at research events and opening evenings. Looking forward to making it an annual event!

Teaching with and getting published with Bloomsbury Fashion Business Cases, with Dr Bethan Alexander and Professor Natascha Radclyffe-Thomas

Our fifth and final (for this academic year) research training and development workshop about teaching with and getting published with Bloomsbury Fashion Business Cases took place last week at LCF High Holborn. Taking an interactive approach, we took colleagues through how to write a case study for publication with Bloomsbury, what to include, what to avoid and looked at some good practices.

Getting published training & development workshop with Professor Gary Warnaby and Professor Sandy Black

The FBR huddle finished the year on a high by hosting a double-bill workshop on Getting Published with Gary Warnaby, Professor of Retailing and Marketing at Manchester Metropolitan University, followed by Professor Sandy Black from London College of Fashion, founder and Editor in Chief of the Journal of Fashion Practice: Design, Creative Process and the Fashion Industry.

Gary took us through the publication process from choosing writing partners, choosing the journal, structuring and submitting the paper and managing the often complex and lengthy review process. Sandy introduced us to her journal, its aims and scope and the types of papers and topics they seek to publish. Both super important sessions in equipping those of us ambitious and curious about academic research in “how to” do it.

FBR Training and development workshop: Impact, Engagement and your research

This evening we had our very own (FBS colleague) Dr Francesca Bonetti with us to talk about research impact and engagement. We considered what is impact? who are my stakeholders? and what are my priorities? in shaping our personal impact strategies. We discussed the importance of leveraging networks, focusing on hot topics and tailoring impact to our target audience. We thought about impact in terms of industry, society and academia – conceptual and instrumental impact and the traditional metrics of measuring it i.e. number of citations and journal impact factors as well as newer ways of engagement. Thanks to everyone that attended, hope it generated lots of food for thought. Let us know how you measure your research impact. Any questions, please post them.

FBR Hub training & development workshop: Finding Funding

Professor Felicity Coleman and Jane Gibb gave an informative and interactive workshop to the FBR hub community, on research funding, covering everything from where to start, internal and external funding provision, the funding process, support available and advice for achieving success. One of the challenges for early career academics is identifying and applying for funding to support research, scholarship and career progression, and the landscape of research funding and the process of writing a high quality bid or grant can be mystifying. This introductory workshop served to demystify the research funding landscape and signpost colleagues to support and information to help kick start or advance their funding journey.

FBR Hub Research Training and Development workshops kick off with Dr Rosy Boardman

Dr Rosy Boardman, Senior Lecturer at Manchester University, kick started our Fashion Business Research Training and Development workshop series with a fantastic talk on Demystifying academic research and building your research network. Drawing from personal experience and advice she’s received from others along the way, she covered the publishing process, writing successful papers, dealing with rejection (on average 95% submissions get rejected) and building your research profile through conferences and networking. She offered some top tips from pitching a paper one level higher than you think it’s worth, citations matter, choosing people to collaborate with to being resilient. The workshop was interactive and developmental, attended by PhD students and research interested and active colleagues, and ended with research drinks and chatter. It was great to get so much positive feedback, summed up by one who said, “how brilliant that FBS are doing these sessions, I can’t wait for the next ones!”. A great start to the workshop series which will build on many of the areas Rosy covered. For more information about the FBR Hub workshops, please see FBS news and sign up to attend using the Eventbrite links.
