Dr Rosy Boardman, Senior Lecturer at Manchester University, kick started our Fashion Business Research Training and Development workshop series with a fantastic talk on Demystifying academic research and building your research network. Drawing from personal experience and advice she’s received from others along the way, she covered the publishing process, writing successful papers, dealing with rejection (on average 95% submissions get rejected) and building your research profile through conferences and networking. She offered some top tips from pitching a paper one level higher than you think it’s worth, citations matter, choosing people to collaborate with to being resilient. The workshop was interactive and developmental, attended by PhD students and research interested and active colleagues, and ended with research drinks and chatter. It was great to get so much positive feedback, summed up by one who said, “how brilliant that FBS are doing these sessions, I can’t wait for the next ones!”. A great start to the workshop series which will build on many of the areas Rosy covered.
